And so our mothers and grandmothers have, more often than not anonymously, handed on the creative spark, the seed of the flower they themselves never hoped to see...or like a sealed letter they could not plainly read....Alice Walker

Handcoloring
Photographs
andcoloring of photographs, initially referred to as handtinting, began in the mid-1800s as portrait artists used their considerable skills applying oils to new Daguerreotype glass plates. With the advent of modern color films, handcoloring all but died. In recent years, as with a number of older crafts, it has undergone a revival. Originally a skill for painting oils on the surface of black and white photos, it now involves a variety of media on many different papers.

We specialize in handcoloring cherished photographs for those who truly want heirloom-style colors. We do not use computer-generated colorization. We prefer the art of hand-applying oils with brushes and oil pencils...then hand rubbing the oils to produce lovely, transparent pastel tints.
